U.S. Census · Vintage V2025 · National rankings

U.S. city rankings.

Nine sourced views of the included Census-estimated city universe, drawn from Census Vintage V2025, ACS 2020–2024, and NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals. Population, least-populated places, growth, density, decline, income, temperature, precipitation. Each ranking is filtered to the universe that makes the answer meaningful.

National rankings

National · Population

Largest U.S. cities

Included Census-estimated city/place records ranked by 2025 resident population estimate. Top 50, top 100, and top 500 cuts live on one sortable table.

National · Population

Least-populated cities

The smallest included Census city/place records by 2025 population estimate, including zero-population rows and the first one-person places.

View ranking →

National · Growth 2020 to 2025

Fastest-growing cities

Top growers by percent change from the April 2020 census base to the July 2025 estimate. Restricted to cities with at least 5,000 residents in 2020 so a hamlet growing from 12 to 200 doesn't top the list on percentage alone.

View ranking →

National · Density

Densest cities

Top cities by residents per square mile of land area, from the 2025 Census Gazetteer. Restricted to cities of at least 5,000 residents.

View ranking →

National · Decline 2020 to 2025

Cities losing population

Cities that lost the largest share of residents from the April 2020 census base to mid-2025, within Vintage 2025 only. Same 5,000-resident floor as the growth ranking.

National · ACS income

Median household income

Cities ranked by ACS 2020–2024 median household income estimate, with the published margin of error shown. This is income, not wealth or affordability.

View ranking →

National · Climate normals

Average annual temperature

Cities ranked by NOAA 1991–2020 annual average temperature normal. These are long-term climate normals, not current weather or best-weather claims.

View ranking →

National · Winter normals

Winter temperature

Cities ranked by the average of December, January, and February NOAA temperature normals. Temperature only; no snow or comfort score implied.

View ranking →

National · Precipitation normals

Annual precipitation

Cities ranked by NOAA 1991–2020 annual precipitation normal. This is precipitation, not flood risk, storm risk, or snowfall.

Methodology · the 2019/2020 seam

Within-vintage growth only.

The 2010–2019 series (Census Vintage 2019) and the 2020–2025 series (Census Vintage 2025) are two independent estimates of different reference dates, produced by two methodology generations. V2019 extrapolated forward from the 2010 census; V2025 re-based to the 2020 census. The seam between them mixes a methodology shift with real population change.

Every growth and decline number on this site stays inside a single vintage. We publish 2020 base → 2025 estimate as the modern growth metric. We do not publish a single 2010 → 2025 growth number.
